Overview

Filial therapy is designed to strengthen the parent-child relationship. Filial Therapy can be used in families who have few or no real problems but the wish to strengthen their relationships within their family system. Filial Therapy can also be used in families that are struggling with significant problems as well as families that are working on reunification.

In Filial Therapy the parents work as a partner with the therapist to create a positive change within the family system. Filial Therapy assists parents in developing skills in the areas of structuring, limit-setting and empathetic listening while engaging in play with their child.

Advantages of Filial Therapy include parents learning the process of the play session, changes that occur in the filial therapy are usually positive and long-lasting, and parents gain a better understanding of their child through play. In reunification therapy, the parent reunifying with the child is provided the opportunity to build a relationship with their child in a safe and structured setting. The psychotherapist provides support to the reunifying parent and is able to answer questions as the filial therapy process proceeds.

Forms

When you call to make your initial appointment, you will be given directions to create a patient portal. You can fill out and submit your intake paperwork through your own secure portal and it will be delivered to your therapist electronically in time for your intake appointment. Though copies of our forms are provided for your convenience, you do not need to print out the forms available on this website as you will be able to sign them electronically when you arrive for your session.
